I've only played Kaiserreich as the Union of Britain, so I'm unsure if the other focus trees are similar to Britain's 7 day focus tree early on after the TUC. Sorry for the rambling! In the case of the Union of Britain, you spend all your time waiting for national focuses to complete since there's nothing else you can really do.
But retaking the mainland is a huge and exciting task, so I think it's worth it.
Kaiserreich merely pushed the events' trigger (Jin Shuren taking power) further down a few years, with Yang Zengxin not getting assassinated in 1928.
